货物包装要求坚固、完好、轻便，在一般运输过程中能防止：包装破裂、内件漏出散失；因垛码、摩擦、震荡或因气压、气温变化引起货物损坏或变质，伤害人员或污损飞机、设备及其他物品。
包装的形状除应适合货物的性质、状态和重量外，还要便于搬运、装卸和堆放，包装外部不能有突出的棱角及钉、钩、刺等；包装要清洁、干燥、没有异味和油腻。
在特定条件下承运的货物、动物，如鲜活易腐货物等，其包装应符合对各货物的特定的要求。
对特小快件货物（如小件样品），必须外加一定体积的木箱或纸箱包装（用填充料衬垫等），包装后整个快件货物的体积长、宽、高合计不得少于40CM，最小一边不得少于5CM。
凡用密封舱飞机运送的货物，不得用带有碎屑、草末等材料作包装（如稻草袋、绳等），包装内的衬垫材料不得外漏，以免堵塞飞机密封设备。
